Lorry Explosion on M6

A lorry had caused traffic occurrences last night when the engine had caught fire spreading across the cab. The pallet transit lorry had stopped on the inside lane, where fire had erupted leaving the driver in serious danger.
It occurred southbound on the M6 around the Manchester area. Passing drivers slowed down to watch the monstrosity happen, as fire blazed out from the cab catching the grass beside. Emergency services are still yet to be at the scene and it is still unknown towards the drivers’ safety. The story will be updated as soon as more information has been brought forward.

Christmas Shopping TV Package

Here is my teams' Christmas TV Package which includes: Images, Voiceover, Piece to camera, and a interview.

Once provided with the task we tried to think of an angle to present our viewers with. After several talks as to what we should do, we settled on how Christmas shopping in Farnham may not be great for students. We also took a recession point of view towards how shops are doing during Christmas.

During the filming I helped decide where the shot will be and how the camera will be positioned but Jack had the final say in the decision as we all had our roles. If anything had to be changed during the filming, it would be when Addie was doing her interview. She kept on looking at the camera when the interviewee was speaking. As the camera was running out of battery we couldn't do a re-shoot and just had to make do with what we had. If we had more time, and more battery we would have gone out to perfect the shot. Also, another thing I would change is when Tom is doing his P2C. It took so many tries to get it perfect where in the final one he lifts up his hands to do quotation marks. This isn’t very professional but as I said before we were running out of battery and if we had more time we would have given it another go.

After the filming was done, Grady and I focused on the editing. With two sets of eyes made sure the final edited piece was perfect. Unfortunately when the video was uploaded to blogger it came out blurry and I am not sure why. I even tried to upload it to You tube if that was any better, although it wasn’t. Apart from this little mishap I hope that it is still clear enough to watch. Even though you cannot clearly see the writing, you can see what we did do it and tried our best to make the footage flow.

I can see that TV is so much more different than Radio because if you do not find the right camera position the story may not flow correctly. This is mainly when there is a voiceover. We had to find an extra shot so that it didn’t cross over with the interview. With Radio, you do not have to worry what the viewer is watching. It’s focusing more on editing and you do not have to worry where your head is and what your body language is like.

Vox Pop on Overdraft Charges

Here is a short story about overdraft charges and how the public feel about it. It was taken out as a 'vox pop' and as a result of this, it was found to be very interesting as too what people in different age groups thought about the situation.

Bank customers should pay a minimal overdraft charge of just £1, according to one Farnham resident today. A mini survey carried out by the Farnham Echo showed that 100 per cent of people agree with the principle behind bank charges but 80 per cent think the charges are too high.
Thirty-year-old Chris Sell said: ‘some kind of charge should be paid, say a token of £1. Excessive charges are not fair.’ Jake Karim, 18 said: ‘What they charge is ridiculous but I do think there should be a 10 percent charge on what you take.’
The survey showed that the over 60’s felt that charges were fair, ‘If you’ve got a limit you’ve got a limit. If you take money you should pay for it and I think charging is correct.’ Said Maureen Edwards, 62.
60-year-old Asaad Hosni felt that the reasoning behind the Courts lenience in favour of the banks was to ‘control peoples spending.’ He himself has never had problems with overdraft charges. Mr Sell commented on the lenience, ‘banks probably have pretty good legal representation
‘If the court were to rule the other way maybe it would open up a can of worms.’

The start of Christmas in Farnham

It's the start of a new month and it's already bitterly cold. Gangs of journalism students have gone out into the streets of Farnham today to film about Christmas shopping and how residents are copying with the credit crunch. The town is already getting into the Christmas season with the lights already up in the town shining brightly.

The light switch on took place on November 28th in Gostrey Meadow. I was eager to pop along and see how Farnham prepares Christmas. As I arrived there I was met with stilt walkers, various stalls which consisted of hot food and drinks, gifts for all the family and even a Santa's grotto. The night was filled with music from a large band stand in the park. Choirs of all ages got up on the stage and sang their heart out to the crowd. It's amazing how the power of a little boys’ voice can cheer up anybody to have a good time.

One of the most exciting things at Gostrey Meadow that night was a small ice rink, now fair enough it wasn't proper ice but with a downpour of rain it helped the children to have more fun. Even if it did involve them falling over quite a lot.

A fancy dress competition was put under way from all ages to switch on the lights. There were two winners: Dixie Lyndsey aged 3 and Larkin Lyndsey aged 2 who dressed up very festive for the occasion. As 6pm came the town gathered together to watch the two children press that magical button to light up their beloved town.

Two local news stories produced in Radio

Two local stories by eblack

Looking through press releases can be hard when you want to find an interesting story to tell your listeners. Here I have found two stories around the Surrey area that has happened within the last 2 weeks. I have written the content myself, and have recorded and posted it up on here. You can determine where the second story is by a short pause. If you cannot recognise this pause, the stories are about elderly people getting burgled within their own home. The other about a prison guard committing a serious offense. I hope you enjoy listening.

Town council finally makes a good decision for students.

I went to town council last night to hear the latest controversy of the town. There were lots of talk of Farnham's 'East Street' re-development, especially of Sainsbury's car park and how they can make the confined space much more appealing and safer to the public. There was also small talk (it doesn't matter how long this talk was but it was definitely talk) of, wait for it...... yes that’s right shops in Farnham for students. YAY!!

I am sure the whole 1st year Journalism class ears pricked up when they heard this. The council is thinking of bringing in shops such as 'New Look' 'River Island' and 'H and M'. There were some good points made that these shops bring in a healthy income and will help Farnham and it's dying students in need of some fulfilment.

We do not know when these shops will arrive or where they will be built but the main thing for now is that eventually Farnham will have a lifestyle.

Hopefully the next thing on the menu is some sort of fast food restaurant or a cheap pub/nightclub for the students to go to at night time.

Up Review

I have decided to write a blog about 'UP' because for the past few weeks it seems to be that everyone is talking about the film and how much they love it. There is just something about the sentimental start which brings you to love 'Carl Fredricksen' and all the characters you meet along the way.

The film is about Carl going on an adventure in memory of his late wife by fixing thousands of balloons to his own house so he could float towards their dream. A cub scout trying to get a 'assisting the elderly' badge named 'Russell' was found on the porch of Carl's when already in the air. The petrified Russell makes friends with a prude Carl and helps him starts to care about other things more than himself.

Together they embark on a wonderful journey were there are an evil villain who inadvertently was Carl's hero as a child, talking dogs and a rare bird named Kevin. One of the most funniest lines from the film is where a dog named 'Doug' becomes friends with Carl and Russell and as he is talking he suddenly turns his head round and shouts 'SQUIRREL' pauses for a few seconds before going back into conversation. At this point, everyone in the cinema were in hysterics. Not just from this scene, but also were Kevin chokes on Carl's walking stick. Even though this may not sound funny it is one of those things that you just have to see.

I strongly advise anyone who hasn't seen this film yet is to get down to the cinema, and watch the film. It is suitable for all ages, everyone will enjoy it. It is definitely a must see movie of the year and Pixar have out done themselves with this fantastic and incredible comedy.
